I feel we have seen films like that before.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">"I had a genuine curiosity about someone who is actually empowered to kill," says Boo at a press conference at the Parkroyal on Pickering hotel yesterday.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">"We forget that in many societies around the world with the death penalty, there is a group of people who have to kill. What is the psyche behind that? That was something I was curious about."</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Singapore actor Fir Rahman plays Aiman, a young prison officer who is taken under the supervision of senior officer and hangman Rahim, played by Malaysian actor Wan Hanafi Su.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Aiman's own life has been marked by the shadow of the death penalty, a fact that colours his relationship with Rahim and his sister, Suhaila, played by local actress Mastura Ahmad.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">The film is Boo Junfeng's second feature, after the critically acclaimed <i>Sandcastle </i>(2010).</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><i>Apprentice</i> will open in Singapore on June 30. It has been rated M18 by the Media Development Authority.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">In Boo's early draft of the screenplay, the hangman was a "caricature", a person "with a certain darkness". But after speaking to a former executioner in Singapore, he revised the depiction.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">"After meeting him, I realised this was a person. Of course, there are still moments of darkness to Rahim's character, but that does not define him as a person," he says.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Wan Hanafi Su, who plays veteran officer Rahim, also met the former hangman as well as prison religious counsellors who administer to the condemned. That means he was making a pitiful few hundred dollars every time he took the risk of losing his life."</i></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">On the 1st of June, I watched the conclusion of a capital punishment heroin trafficking case in Singapore's Supreme Court. I was left profoundly disturbed.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">As Judge Choo Han Teck announced the sentences in court, the family members of the defendants erupted in pain. Mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, cousins, sons, daughters - their bodies shuddered in agony and tears streaked down their pained faces. Their heartbreaking cries reverberated softly through the crowded courtroom. 2 of the 3 co-defendants, Kalwant Singh and Norasharee Bin Gous, were sentenced to death by hanging. The 3rd defendant's life was spared for his "substantive assistance" to the authorities. He will be imprisoned for life instead.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Yet even in the presence of such acute intense human suffering, the courtroom proved to be the most unsympathetic of places. The judge, while allowing the families of the defendants to spend some time with their loved ones before they were taken to prison, declared that they could only meet for 10 minutes because he had "another matter to attend to". The public prosecutor instructed the guards to stop some family members from talking to the defendants, presumably because they were not part of the "immediate" family. Could the Singaporean justice system treat these defendants and their families with any more cruelty and indifference?</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Even as controversy over capital punishment rages worldwide, support for the death penalty in Singapore remains remarkably strong. Though a legislative change in 2012 made the death penalty no longer mandatory for drug traffickers, prosecutors and judges continue to impose capital punishment for non-violent drug offenses. The dominant Singaporean narrative is that the death penalty has been an effective deterrent against drug crime, despite a complete absence of academic evidence backing up such a viewpoint. As Oxford University professors Roger Hood and Carolyn Hoyle explain, "It has been argued that the death penalty is an indisputable deterrent to drug trafficking, but no evidence of a statistical kind has been forthcoming to support this contention." In fact, the death penalty is so accepted that it is often left out of mainstream public discourse. Not a single Singaporean media outlet covered this case or the resulting announcement of death sentences - a situation that would be unthinkable in other developed nations.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">There is also a perception that Singapore has robust legal safeguards that prevent it from wrongfully convicting drug traffickers. Admittedly, Singapore enjoys strong rule of law. However, many might be surprised by the flimsiness of evidence that is accepted with such deadly punishments at stake. In this case, there is a serious question as to whether, Kalwant Singh, who acted as a drug courier, was actually aware that he was trafficking heroin. Singh has consistently claimed that he believed he was transporting "panparak" - a preparation of Indian betel leaf, areca nut and tobacco that is regularly consumed in Southeast Asia.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">The only major piece of evidence that contradicts Singh's account is testimony from a co-defendant, Mohamed Yazid. Very conveniently, Yazid was spared the death penalty for his testimony against Singh. Singaporean law allows drug trafficking defendants who provide "substantive assistance" to the authorities to escape the death penalty, providing a strong incentive to testify against others, even dishonestly.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">By the Court's own admission, "a person facing a capital drug offence may falsely implicate his co-accused so as to save himself from the gallows". Despite this recognition, in his written opinion, the judge comes to the conclusion that "Yazid ... had spoken the truth", thereby convicting Singh and sentencing him to death.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">We should never be comfortable executing people on the basis of such questionable evidence. [<i>We should </i>never <i>be comfortable executing people.</i> - DPN]</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Moreover, the fact that the majority of people caught up in the drug trade worldwide come from impoverished backgrounds is too often overlooked. It emerged that one of the defendants in the case was earning a measly one hundred Malaysian Ringgit (about 25 US Dollars) for each "bundle" of drugs that he delivered. That means he was making a pitiful few hundred dollars every time he took the risk of losing his life. The word "drug trafficker" often evokes images of a wealthy drug kingpin profiting royally off the suffering of addicts. In reality, those executed are very rarely the kingpins who command the drug trade. Instead, like the defendants in this case, they are mostly poor, low-level drug couriers who may have little knowledge of what they are getting themselves into.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">There should be little doubt that Singapore's attitude towards the death penalty for drug traffickers is fraught with misperceptions and half-truths. With a better appreciation of the academic evidence on deterrence, uncertainty in the legal process and the impoverished background of most convicted drug traffickers, one would hope that Singaporeans might reconsider their position. Given the facts, it is hard to fathom how imposing the death penalty for non-violent drug crimes is consistent with basic ideals of fairness and proportionality.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">After the verdict was delivered, the agonizing scene I encountered is one I will never forget. The distraught defendants and their families, separated almost entirely by glass, tried desperately to touch each other through a paper-thin slit in the wall. They barely managed to grasp each other's fingers or meet their lips for a fleeting last kiss. Perhaps, it is only by witnessing the utter state of despair in the courtroom, that people can truly comprehend the gravity of the death penalty. Can Aiman overcome his conscience and a past that haunts him to become the executioner’s apprentice? </i><br /><br />SINGAPORE: Boo Junfeng’s sophomore feature <i>Apprentice </i>did not come away completely empty-handed when it failed to pick up an award at the recent Cannes Film Festival.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Following its premiere in the progressive Un Certain Regard section of the festival, where it received positive feedback from film critics and a standing ovation, the prison drama also got picked up for distribution in the UK and Ireland.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Arrow Films, a multi-platform distributor of feature films and TV series, picked up the distribution rights to the film in these markets after being “totally struck by director Boo Junfeng’s power and skilful execution”, according to Arrow’s acquisition director Tom Stewart.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">This is yet another feather in <i>Apprentice</i>’s cap, adding on to a packed international theatrical release schedule that includes Poland, Mexico, Turkey, Greece and Hong Kong. Boo’s tale about the relationship between a young correctional officer and the chief executioner of a prison opened in France on Wednesday and is scheduled to hit Singapore cinemas at the end of this month. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">“The positive reviews so far have been very helpful.” Boo told Channel NewsAsia. “I'm very happy the film will be seen in cinemas in all these territories. No U.S. distribution has been confirmed.<br /><br />Source: <a href="http://www.indiewire.com/2016/05/2016-cannes-film-festival-what-you-need-to-know-about-these-6-un-certain-regard-titles-291179/" target="_blank">Indiewire</a>, Bryn Gelbart, May 2016<br /><br /><br /><div style="text-align: left;"><b><span style="font-size: large;">Singapore death penalty under the spotlight as hangman film stirs emotions at Cannes</span></b></div><br />Before he made his new film about the death penalty, Boo Junfeng sat down to tea with some of Singapore’s retired hangmen.<br /><br />He also talked to the priests and imams who helped condemned prisoners make their last walk to the gallows.<br /><br />And most difficult of all, the young filmmaker spent years trying to reach through the curtain of shame to families who had lost fathers and sons to the hangman’s rope.<br /><br />But it was only after Boo, whose film was to premiere at the Cannes film festival Monday, met one particularly “humane” executioner that he had an epiphany.<br /><br />He realised that no movie has ever dealt with the whole horrible business from the perspective of the man who pulls the lever.<br /><br />“I had already started to write [the film] but after I met the first hangman I couldn’t write for three months. What completely threw me was how much I enjoyed his company,” said Boo.<br /><br />“He was not like I thought. He was likeable, charismatic, grandfatherly jocular and open about what he did. He took pride in the almost caring way he looked after the prisoners trying to make it as humane as he could, and I realised how difficult that was.<br /><br />“He really shook up my ideas and forced me to rethink everything.”<br /><br />So Boo took his film - he toiled over for five years -- one step further.<br /><br />For <i>Apprentice </i>has a shocking twist. It is the story of a young man who ended up learning the executioner’s trade from the man who opened the trapdoor on his own father.<br /><br />More surprising still is the intensity of the almost father-son relationship that develops between the young prison guard and the hangman.<br /><br />“He is in some ways searching for his father,” Boo said. “And in doing that he finds this man. What I was going for was human truth. I didn’t want to make it an activist film.”<br /><br />The death penalty is nevertheless a hot political issue in Singapore and in neighbouring Indonesia, particularly when foreigners have fallen foul of strict anti-drug smuggling laws.<br /><br />The execution of seven foreigners in Bali last year - including two Australians and a mentally ill Brazilian - sparked an international outcry, and several others, including a British woman and a Frenchman, are still on death row there.<br /><br />Boo said he began his research with the book <i><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Once-Jolly-Hangman-Singapore-Justice/dp/1742663737" target="_blank">Once a Jolly Hangman</a></i> which features Darshan Singh, Singapore’s chief executioner for nearly 50 years who once executed 18 men in one day.<br /><br />Its British author Alan Shadrake was arrested the morning after the book’s Singapore launch in 2010 and was held for a month in Changi prison for insulting the country’s judiciary.<br /><br />He had criticised the way he claimed the death penalty was disproportionately applied to the poor, while well-connected criminals and wealthy foreigners escaped the noose.<br /><br />Boo shot the prison scenes in disused prisons in Australia to avoid controversy in the tiny city state, where an estimated 95 per cent of the population still support the death penalty.<br /><br />“It would have been easy to make a film about the death penalty itself, but it’s much bigger than that. I learned so much about the value of human life” from making the movie.<br /><br />Boo, 32, one of a new wave of talented Singapore filmmakers, said his friends who are against the death penalty “may be disappointed by the film”, which is showing in the Certain Regard section at Cannes.<br /><br />“I took myself out of the comfort zone to address the issue from a different point of view. I don’t have a view myself. Because the humanity behind the issue is so much more complex,” [No, it isn't. - DPN] said Boo, whose semi-autobiographical first feature <i>Sandcastle </i>was a hit at the French festival in 2009.<br /><br />“Apprentice took so long because I had so much to learn, so many things were beyond my experience and very few people really knew (about this world)...
